Now this week's letter came directly from a reader.
Beth wrote in and said this:
"I'd like to request you cover the topic of irrigation. Is it really worth doing a drip system over sprinklers? Pros and cons, what you'd suggest for installing in a large garden, cheapest parts to use but with decent quality to last, what to avoid, irrigation for larger garden beds. We are just in the middle of our third year of a garden and expanded fifty percent bigger this year. Still using sprinklers set on stakes and keeping up since we only have part time jobs and can manage daily watering. It is taxing though. But we have not been able to spring for the expense of supplies for building a system."
Beth, this one is for you. And honestly it is for me too, because we made the same mistake on our family farm for longer than I want to admit.
We did it the hard way for years
I want to be honest with you about something before we get into the how.
We watered by hand and with stake sprinklers on our farm for a long time. Not because we did not know drip irrigation existed. We knew. We just kept putting it off. There was always something more urgent, always another project that needed the money first, always a reason to wait one more season.
And every one of those seasons we stood in the garden in the evening moving sprinklers around, soaking leaves we did not want to soak, evaporating water into the summer air before it ever reached the roots, and spending time that could have gone somewhere else.
The season we finally switched to drip was the season I understood what we had been giving up. Not just water and time, but consistency. The kind of steady, even moisture that makes plants perform the way they are supposed to. That switch changed how our garden produced and it changed how much we enjoyed managing it.
Beth is in year three and her garden just got fifty percent bigger. She is at exactly the point we were when we finally made the change. This newsletter is what I wish someone had handed us before we spent all those evenings with a hose.
Why the way most people water is working against them
Stake sprinklers and hand watering work. Beth is proof of that. But they have a ceiling, and most gardeners hit that ceiling right around the same time Beth did.
The first problem is time. Watering by hand or moving stake sprinklers around a large garden takes real time every single day and missing a day during a heat wave has consequences. That daily obligation ties you to the garden in a way that makes everything else harder. You cannot take a weekend away. You cannot have a long day off the property. The garden is always on the clock.
The second problem is where the water actually goes. Sprinklers spray water everywhere including on leaves and bare soil between plants. Water on leaves invites fungal disease, particularly on tomatoes and squash. Water on bare soil evaporates fast in summer heat, meaning a significant portion of what you put out never reaches the root zone where it actually does something. You can run a sprinkler for thirty minutes and have dry soil two inches down because most of it evaporated off the surface before it could soak in.
The third problem is consistency. Uneven watering creates uneven plants. The blossom end rot we covered earlier this season traces back largely to moisture swings. Cracked tomatoes, bitter cucumbers, tough beans. A lot of produce quality problems that gardeners blame on weather or variety actually come back to watering inconsistency, even when you are doing your best to stay on schedule.
Drip irrigation solves all three of those problems at once.
Drip versus sprinkler: the honest comparison
Sprinklers are not wrong for every situation and drip is not right for every situation. Here is where each one actually makes sense.
Sprinklers work better for germinating seeds, where gentle overhead spray keeps the soil surface consistently moist. Lawns and cover crops where you want even coverage across a large area. Situations where you are watering irregular shapes that would make running drip lines complicated.
Sprinklers work worse for established vegetable gardens where wet foliage creates disease problems. Large gardens where moving and managing them adds up to a real time cost. Hot and windy conditions where a significant percentage of the water evaporates before it hits the soil.
Drip works better for established plants in defined rows or beds. Anywhere water conservation matters. Tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers, and anything else that suffers from wet foliage. Large gardens where hand watering is no longer practical. Any garden where you want to attach a timer and walk away.
Drip works worse for new seed beds where the surface needs to stay moist for germination. Very densely planted beds where individual emitters do not make practical sense.
For Beth's situation and for most homestead gardens in year two or beyond, drip is the right move. The question is how to build it without overspending or buying components that fall apart.
Where we landed: Dripworks
When we finally committed to building out a drip system on the farm, we did the research on where to source components and kept coming back to Dripworks.
Dripworks is a company that has been selling drip irrigation components to home gardeners and small farms for decades. What we liked about them is that they sell individual components at fair prices rather than forcing you into a kit that includes things you do not need and leaves out things you do. Their website has guides, calculators, and layout tools that walk you through building a system for your specific setup, which is genuinely useful when you are doing this for the first time.
The quality is good. We have been running Dripworks components on our farm and the fittings hold, the emitters do not clog constantly, and the tubing holds up through multiple seasons without getting brittle. That matters because the cheaper kit options you find at big box stores often start failing in year two right when you have come to depend on the system.
You can find them at dripworks.com and if you call them they will actually talk you through your layout on the phone. For a beginner building their first system, that kind of support is worth a lot.
How a drip system actually works
A basic drip irrigation system has four parts and understanding each one makes it a lot less intimidating to build.
The first part is the water source connection. This attaches to your outdoor spigot. You run through a filter and a pressure regulator before anything else connects. The filter keeps debris out of the emitters. The pressure regulator drops your household water pressure down to the ten to fifteen PSI that drip systems are designed to run at. Drip systems run at much lower pressure than sprinklers and without a regulator the pressure will blow out your fittings and emitters over time. Do not skip this piece.
The second part is the main line. This is a half-inch poly tubing that runs from your spigot connection down the length of your garden. Think of it as the main artery that everything else branches off of.
The third part is the distribution tubing. Quarter-inch tubing runs from the main line out to individual plants or down the length of a bed.
The fourth part is the emitters. These are the small devices that drip water at a controlled rate, usually one to two gallons per hour. You can also use drip tape, which is a flat perforated tubing that runs the length of a bed and seeps water slowly along its entire length. Drip tape is cheaper than individual emitters and works very well for row crops and dense plantings like beans, carrots, and greens.
At the end of every line you put a simple end cap or fold-and-clip to shut it off.
That is the whole system. Water source, main line, distribution tubing, emitters, end caps.
How to build it affordably without buying junk
What to buy:
A pressure regulator and filter. Dripworks sells a reliable combo unit and it is the first thing to put in your cart. Do not skip it.
Half-inch poly main line tubing. Buy a roll rather than pre-cut lengths. A hundred feet is a good starting point for a large garden and gives you flexibility in your layout.
A hole punch tool. This creates the holes in the main line where your quarter-inch tubing connects. Small, cheap, and essential.
Barbed fittings and connectors. Buy a variety pack. You will want more than you think and they are inexpensive.
Quarter-inch distribution tubing. Buy a roll. More than you think you need.
Emitters or drip tape. For individual plants like tomatoes and peppers, individual emitters give you control. For dense rows of beans or greens, drip tape running the length of the row is more practical and cheaper per foot.
Ground staples. You need something to hold the tubing in place along the soil. Metal staples work well and cost very little.
A timer. This is the piece that changes everything. A basic battery-operated hose timer costs fifteen to thirty dollars and lets you set the system to run on whatever schedule you choose. You set it once and the garden waters itself. For Beth, who described daily watering as taxing, a timer is the single most impactful thing on this list. The garden runs while you are doing something else.
What to avoid:
The cheap drip kits that come in a box at big box stores. They look affordable but the fittings are thin plastic that cracks and the emitters clog easily. Buy components separately from a company that stands behind their product.
Skipping the pressure regulator. Most commonly skipped, most commonly regretted.
Burying your main line if you can help it. Running it on the surface or just under mulch makes it easy to add to, adjust, and troubleshoot. Buried systems are harder to work with when something goes wrong.
How to plan the layout for a large garden
Run one main line down the center path or along the edge of the garden. From that main line, branch a quarter-inch line into each bed. Within each bed, run either drip tape down each row or individual emitters at each plant location.
Group plants with similar water needs on the same zone if possible. Tomatoes and peppers share a zone because they need deep, consistent watering. Greens and herbs share a zone because they need lighter, more frequent moisture. This matters once you add a timer and start automating different sections.
For a garden that expanded fifty percent this year, you are probably looking at two or three zones total. Each zone runs off the same spigot connection with a manifold or Y-fittings that let you control each section independently.
Start with the beds that are the most time-consuming to water by hand and build the system out from there. You do not have to do the whole garden at once. Add one zone at a time as budget and time allow. That is how we did it on our farm and by the end of the second season the whole operation was covered.
What to expect the first season
The first season with drip is a calibration season. You will discover that one bed is getting too much water and another is not getting enough. You will find a fitting that worked itself loose. You will notice the emitter at the end of a long run is not flowing as well as the ones closer to the main line, which usually means checking your pressure or reducing the number of emitters on that line.
All of that is normal and easy to fix. The system gets dialed in over time and by the second season it largely runs itself.
What you will notice immediately is how much time you get back. And what you will notice by midsummer is that your plants are healthier and more consistent than they were under the old watering routine, because the root zone is staying evenly moist without the surface ever getting waterlogged or drying out between waterings.
We noticed it in our harvests. More consistent fruit. Less blossom end rot. Fewer disease problems on the tomatoes. The garden did not get bigger that first drip season but it performed better than it ever had.
What we should have done sooner
I said at the start that we ignored drip irrigation longer than we should have. The honest reason is that it felt like a project and we were already full of projects.
What I did not see clearly until we actually built the system is that the daily watering routine we were defending was itself a project. A project that repeated every single day and never got finished. Drip irrigation is a project you do once that replaces a project you were doing every day forever.
That math is worth doing before you put it off another season.
Beth, start with one zone. Get it running. See how it feels to walk past the garden in the evening and know it has already been watered. Then add from there.
One thing to do today
Go to dripworks.com and use their layout guide or call them and describe your garden setup. They will help you figure out what you need and what it will cost. Price it out before you decide it is too expensive. Most people are surprised by how little a first zone actually runs.
